What educators are saying

This was a great activity to help my class consolidate their knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions!
My students enjoyed this activity. I have an advanced and an on level math class, so I used both versions. It was a challenging activity that really required the students to think about the puzzles and how to solve them.

Description

Challenge your 5th graders to put their skills of adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators to the test with this exciting digital escape room activity. Designed around fifth grade math standards for numbers and operations with fractions, students will complete four puzzles to escape the chocolate recipe thief's lab. *This product includes two levels of difficulty for differentiation! Option A is VERY challenging and is great for students with a strong grasp on the content. Option B has a few less problems, breaks puzzles down into more steps, and offers more hints.

In order to complete the four puzzles in this digital escape room, students must be able to:

  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Form equivalent fractions in order to perform addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Subtract mixed numbers using regrouping strategies.
  • Solve word problems with fractions.
  • Identify the numerator and denominator in a fraction.
  • Simplify improper fractions and reduce fractions.
  • Solve simple ciphers (directions and hints included).

Students must be able to access a Google Form™ in order to complete this digital breakout activity (no e-mail addresses are required). The form automates the escape room process, making it super simple for teacher's to implement! A detailed answer key is provided along with tips to give your students if they get stuck.

This is a great cooperative learning activity for students to complete in groups. This escape room can also be done by individuals as an enrichment or review activity, for homework, or for a fun rainy day activity. If you are looking for an easy to use worksheet alternative, then try this online breakout! Homeschool parents and math tutors also enjoy challenging their children with digital escape rooms.

What's Included:

  • URL and QR code to access the Google Form™ which automates the escape room process
  • Detailed answer key
  • Success signs for students to snap photos with after they complete the challenge
  • Optional printable versions of the clues to help students to show their work and get more students involved (do not pass out until students have reached that clue on the form).
  • Printable "Security Badge" for students to use as an exit ticket. This also includes a QR code to access the form.
  • Option to save a copy of the form to your own Google Drive™ in order to view student results.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (30 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

See our "simpler" addition and subtraction of fractions escape room. This product does not require regrouping for subtraction and does not use mixed-numbers or improper fractions.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
