In Topic F, the Math Detectives investigate community workers while also examining the various strategies when adding pairs of two-digit numbers together. While decomposing these numbers into tens and ones, students will follow these fun, interactive stories as they learn to combine tens and ones when adding. They will use their own personal whiteboards and markers (or math notebooks) while also using math manipulatives from their math toolkits as they follow along the mysteries being solved with the detectives around the community. While learning about this important concept of base ten and algebraic thinking, they also learn about the wide variety of jobs around our communities. The Math Detectives explore jobs of mechanics, mailmen, firefighters, doctors, park rangers, construction workers, crossing guards, business men and women, bellhops, zookeepers and more in this giant bundle that is sure to keep your students engaged and actively discussing these mathematical concepts.

Use these lessons as whole group shared on your Interactive whiteboard in the classroom, shared on your screen on Google Meet or Zoom for distant learning, or as a small group lesson in present mode as a visual while teaching. Students will follow along using their individual whiteboards or notebooks. Each slide is annotated with dialogue in speech bubbles to guide your lesson, but feel free to make it your own! Each slide is designed to serve as a foundation for which math discourse in the classroom can build and grow. Students are encouraged to "turn and talk" to partners to discuss their mathematical thinking and share ideas.

After the lessons are the independent slides for students. You can assign these slides in Google Classroom or on Seesaw (or any other program that supports Google slide products). Simply hold "ctrl" to select the slides you want to assign, go to file and make a copy. From there you can assign as you normally would on your preferred digital platform. These slides are interactive when in edit mode only! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here or you can email me (see my TOU below for contact information). This can serve as part of your technology work within your math center rotation!
