The PowerPoint and Guided Notes packet include detailed steps for adding fractions with like and unlike denominators, plentiful examples of each skill, and word problems to help students connect the skill to real-life. Two different strategies are taught for adding fractions with unlike denominators: the LCD Method (Least Common Denominator), and the Butterfly Method. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
