This lesson was designed with a 90-minute block in mind. If you have shorter class periods, you will find that all of this material will not fit into one day, especially if you add in your own syllabus/class procedures review. There is enough material to cover more than one 90-minute block class.

The "Organizing World History" activity gives you 35 major world events. Cut out the slips, shuffle them, and hand them to your students. Have the class attempt to arrange themselves in order from the earliest events to the most recent! This is a challenging activity that gets students up and talking without having to do the same ice breaker games they are likely doing in other classes on the first day of school.

The "Two Truths and a Lie: History Edition" game is a fun, low-key way to end your very first class. Instead of having students come with the truths and lies about themselves, you have six slides that have strange history facts mixed with a lie. Have you class guess which one isn't true!

The Geologic Timeline is a great way to have students take a look at the "bigger picture" of history before diving into the course content.

The Course and Exam Description (CED) scavenger hunt is a great pairs activity that helps students familiarize themselves with the course. The CED is an invaluable tool for students, and many students don't even know it exists!

The slides are not editable, but I have included some blank slides that match the style of the slides. Use these as background images and add your text over them to make your first day of class presentation complete with your own procedures, grading policy, expectations, etc.
