Description

Building background for students before reading a novel is one important scaffolding measure that teachers can take. Before starting A Thousand Splendid Suns, send your students on a virtual field trip to Afghanistan!

WHY THIS ACTIVITY IS SO IMPORTANT:

Besides building background knowledge for students, helping kids see a place in the world different from home and negatively pictured in the media is helpful for expanding their world view. This product features video by Afghani filmmakers, the beautiful landscapes of the country, and an admiring tone for the culture and legacy of what Afghanistan has to offer the world. The activity also give students an opportunity to acknowledge any biases they might be bringing to the novel and reflect on how those biases will affect their reading. Students are also encouraged to reflect at the end of the activity and share what things they've learned surprised them or impacted their view of the country.

THE SETUP:

Students will receive two things: their handout and a link to the Google Earth Voyager site being used to host the "field trip".

The student handout walks students through:

  1. A reflection on self and biases held about Afghanistan
  2. An overview of Afghanistan as a whole
  3. A tour through Herat featuring the citadel, minarets, and a famous mosque
  4. A tour through Kabul featuring some YouTube vloggers and images
  5. A trip to the Buddha statues of Bayman
  6. An exploration of the Afghani/Pakistani border and confict there
  7. A return to self and reflection on learning

As students move through each of these seven steps on the handout, they are simultaneously following the guided Google Earth tour on another tab or window on their computers.
