Description

When I was a bilingual teacher I created this page for my students to add to their Reader's Notebook. It was helpful to identify those words that were written and sounded the same in Spanish and English. Learning about cognates helped the students understand what they were reading in their second language. It can be used all year.

They were also careful in regards to false cognates. Before they added a new word to their list they would first look the word up in a dictionary (Spanish or English) to make sure the meaning was the same in both languages. It was fun! To them it was similar to a scavenger hunt. It helped with their vocabulary too.

This sheet can also be part of a literacy center where all students can add to it.
It can also be a bulletin board idea where the whole school could search for words to add.
It doesn't have to be only Spanish and English. Use this as a spring board into other languages.

I hope it helps your students too.

This page will be part of the Bilingual Reader's notebook which will be made available in late January.

Thanks for looking!
