What educators are saying

This resource allowed my student to express their knowledge and information learned from reading the book. Thank you.
I used this for an enrichment group for students who are reading at a 8th grade level in 6th grade. They greatly enjoyed the higher level questions which we turned into discussions.

Description

This unit plan really helps students understand and process Ishmael Beah’s evocative, heartbreaking, and hopeful memoir. The 27 separate editable resources (over 80 pages of instructional materials!) are neatly organized and labeled, with a unit overview listing objectives, essential questions, enduring understandings, all supporting texts, and each resource.

Materials include:
*background building readings and activities
*a motif tracking activity
*pre-reading reflection questions
*content notes for all 21 chapters (summary, quote analysis, and questions)
*exploring resilience (with Jon Stewart interview)
*supplementary articles and embedded questions
*short writing tasks/open responses
*post-reading reflection and discussion questions
*music and identity poster mini-project
*motif project and presentation (assignment, planning pages, and rubrics)
*final essay assignment
*two vocabulary sets (vocab in context activities, PowerPoint of definitions/examples, practice pages, and quiz)

I have really enjoyed teaching this unit for many years. Students make unbelievable connections to the text as they increase their worldliness, empathy, and global awareness. Delve deeply into all this incredible memoir has to offer!

This resource aligns with my full year 9th Grade English UBD Curriculum Map (available in my shop) as Unit 5 - Dehumanization and the Reconstruction of Identity.
It is highly applicable to and adaptable for other levels, as well.
