Description
The resource is designed to be used before or during the study of the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. It is not a novel study per se, but rather a package of informational texts and activities that provide students with information about the author, the historical background of the conflict in Sudan and the main character of the novel (who is fictionalized in the book), Salva Dut.
1) The resource begins with a figurative language worksheet: 9 expressions/idioms from the three reading passages are listed and students are asked to define them. This could be done before or after reading, individually, in groups, or as a class;
2) There are three texts: “Linda Sue Park, Author of A Long Walk to Water” is a page and a half in length; “Sudan and South Sudan”, a 2-page look at the history of the historical country of Sudan and the achieving of independence for South Sudan; and “Salva Dut”, a 1-page biography of the main character of the novel (who is a real person), his experiences as one of the lost boys of Sudan, and his role today in improving the lives of other Africans. This section could be read after students complete the novel. The texts total four and a half pages of writing and illustrations.
3) All three texts include vocabulary and comprehension/opinion questions;
4) An answer key is provided for the figurative language, vocabulary and question pages.
The resource includes 16 pages of reading passages, student work pages, and answer key pages.
