A Handful of Stars Novel Study

Here is a novel study for A Handful of Stars by Newbery award winning author Cynthia Lord.  This is a wonderful book about relationships with friends, family, prejudice, and love AND letting go of your own ideas and doing what is best for a loved one.

The comprehension skills that are covered in this novel study are predicting, visualization, cause and effect, sequencing, questioning, main idea, key details, theme, summarizing, character traits, opinion writing, point of view, and character analysis. There are plenty higher order thinking questions throughout the novel study as well.

The novel study also includes an extensive differentiated vocabulary study.  You can decide the level of difficulty that the students will do in their packets. Here are the choices:

1. The student can simple have a copy of the vocabulary and definitions to refer back to as they read.

2. The student can copy the vocabulary word and match it to its definition.

3. The student can copy the definition and match it to the vocabulary word.

4. The student can copy the vocabulary word and the definition.

This novel study is perfect for whole group instruction, small groups, book clubs, or individual study. It would also be a great tool to keep a student reading and writing all summer long.

A RUBRIC is included for student expectations and easy grading.

An ANSWER KEY is also included.
