    Description

The Short Story Unit is a staple in many literature classrooms. But finding quality, grade-level appropriate short stories that will engage students and lend themselves to ELA skills and content can be challenging. To make that process a little easier, I have collected high-quality short stories all in one place. All together, you get almost 300 pages of reading questions, writing prompts, visualization tools, and literary criticism activities.

If you were to purchase each item in this bundle individually, you would spend $50, but buying the bundle will save you $10, which is like getting three of the products for free!

Since these are Google resources, when you purchase this resource, TPT will create a file in your Google Drive where you will find the fillable .pdf, Google Forms, and Google Slides.

Here's what you get in this bundle:

-3 Tools for Teaching "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid: I first read "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid when a past student was working to put together a collection of poetry for a forensics competition. Her performance focused on mothers and daughters, and Kincaid's short story fit perfectly. To help teach this story, I have designed 17 reading questions, 12 writing prompts (rubric included), and a literary criticism tool. Everything is available in a .pdf, Google Slides, and the reading questions are also in a Google Form. Buying the bundle is like getting this product for free!

-5 Tools for Teaching "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty: The journey of Phoenix Jackson is a staple in many American literature classes, and her trip comments on Americana in unique ways. This is a great tool for teaching setting, plot, and deliberate ambiguity. To help teach this short story, I've designed 10 reading questions, a symbol log, a literary criticism activity, 12 writing prompts (rubric included), and a visualization tools with rubric. Everything is available in a .pdf, Google Slides, and the reading questions are also in a Google Form.

-5 Tools for Teaching Editha by William Dean Howells: "Editha" is a great text for teaching a variety of skills: analyzing characterization, author's purpose, theme, and historical context. It's also a great text for focusing on inference and vocabulary development. To help students work with this text, I have included a pre-reading page to establish historical context, a version of the text with questions side-by-side to guide reading comprehension and analysis, a literary criticism tool, 11 constructed responses prompts and an easy-to-use rubric, and a synthesis tool that challenges students to analyze across media.

-5 Tools for Teaching "A White Heron" by Sarah Orne Jewett: This short story is a great piece of American regionalism. To help teach this story, I have placed the text side-by-side with 50 reading questions. That's 36 pages of questions, writing prompts, a historical context tool, a literary criticism activity, and a visualization activity!

-"The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" Reading Questions and Writing Prompts: Katherine Anne Porter's short story is an excellent piece of literature for teaching stream of consciousness. It's also a great character study! To help teachers use this text in class, I've put together these tools: 17 reading questions, 10 writing prompts (with rubric), and a visualization tool with rubric. Everything is available in a .pdf, Google Slides, and the reading questions are also in a Google Form. Buying the bundle is like getting this product for free!

-5 Tools for Teaching "A New England Nun" by Mary E. Freeman: "A New England Nun" by Mary E. Freeman is my favorite short story. Freeman's story provides incisive feminist commentary, and its main character Louisa is unlike any other. To help teachers bring this text into the classroom, I've put together 35+ reading questions that run side-by-side with the text. I've also designed 10 writing prompts (with a rubric), a visualization activity with rubric, a commentary tool, and a literary criticism activity.

-"The Yellow Wallpaper" Instructional Pack: Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story is a powerful piece of feminist literature. But it's also a challenging text for students, so I've built 44 reading questions that appear side-by-side with the text. There's also 16 writing prompts and a literary criticism tool. This pack also includes questions for "Why I Wrote 'The Yellow Wallpaper'?", a paired poem that Gilman alludes to in the text called "Against Idleness and Mischief," and Crash Course Literature Listening Guide.

-Abridged and Modified "Berenice" by Edgar Allan Poe: Like many of Poe's short stories, "Berenice" features some dense language and vocabulary, which is why I have abridged the text and modified some of the language. To guide my students through this text, I have also included side-by-side guided questions. Students answer questions about comprehension, characterization, historical context, mood, word choice, and more! In addition, I have included a literary criticism graphic organizer and 10 writing prompts with an easy-to-use rubric.

-"Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald: F.Scott Fitzgerald's "Winter Dreams" has become one of my favorite pieces of read and teach. It's a great complement to The Great Gatsby, but its characters provide their own unique complications and insights into the American Dream. The text provides teachers with rich opportunities to touch on a variety of skills and subjects including reading and written analysis, vocabulary, and literary criticism. For this reason, I am including my best 3 "Winter Dreams" resources in one place.
