Students will be able to…
- Understand the difference between the 8 different disorders and analyze the influences on our health that leads to mental illness.
- Advocate for those who need help dealing with a mental illness - who to go to and how to get help.
LESSON PREPARATION TEACHING OUTLINE:
Lesson 6: Mental Illness and Eating Disorders
- Begin the class by asking your students, “How would you explain what a mental illness is?”
- Begin with slide #1 - going through anxiety and mood disorders.
- Watch Video #1 on Bi-Polar Disorder (if time allows, go through the questions provided by TedEd). DISCUSS.
- Continue discussing psychotic disorders, impulse/addiction disorders, and personality disorders.
- Watch Video #2 on Schizophrenia (if time allows, go through the questions provided by TedEd). DISCUSS
- Discuss OCD and PTSD
- Watch Video #3 on PTSD (if time allows, go through the questions provided by TedEd). DISCUSS
- Go through the different eating disorders - anorexia, bulimia, and body dysmorphia.
- Watch the two different Dove Videos #4 and #5 and answer the discussion question on the Google Slideshow
- Watch Video #7 - Why are Eating Disorders so Hard to Treat?
- Video #8 - “Thin” Promo
