Description

Ratios and Proportions - Graphing Proportional Relationships

This lesson teaches students how to determine whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship by using graphs based on the 7th Grade Common Core Math Standards. This lesson begins by reviewing some big ideas and terminology:

  • Proportion
  • Rate of Change
  • Proportional Relationships
  • The Constant of Proportionality

Students will then look at data tables to find the constant of proportionality between the quantities if one exists, write the equation of the line, and use the graph to answer questions about the proportional relationship. Students will practice solving these types of problems in various contexts and activities until mastery. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to determine if a proportional relationship exists between quantities as well as analyze graphs. This is lesson is part of our 7th Grade Math: Ratios and Proportions Unit and part of our 7th Grade Year Long Curriculum. CLICK ON THE PREVIOUS LINKS to see these COMPREHENSIVE UNITS!

Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
