Students will be able to… 

  1. Understand how stereotyping and labeling can lead to bullying which can impact one’s overall health. 
  2. Explain how our decision to stereotype can affect their own health and the health of others. 

LESSON PREPARATION TEACHING OUTLINE:

Lesson 5: Stereotyping and Labeling

ACTIVITY #1 - STEREOTYPING

  1. As students are walking into the classroom, have note cards ready with a variety of different stereotypes written on them. For example, JOCK, NERD, CHEERLEADER, ASIAN, AND SO ON…
  2. Ask the students to NOT show their classmates what their stereotype is - for the first 5-7 minutes of class, have the students DESCRIBE their stereotype to one another so their classmates can guess what it is. 
    1. How did your students feel doing this activity? 
    2. Was anyone offended or angry? 
    3. Was anyone, “I would be happy to be that stereotype!”
