Using an Escape Room to develop curriculum knowledge is an exciting activity that will inspire learners from 2nd Grade to 5th Grade (and beyond depending on the level of the learner and the subject being developed).

The curriculum content for each is listed on the description of each product- each Escape Room comes with a complete set of instructions and curriculum coverage overview with each challenge.

The aim of the Escape Room is to provide jeopardy for the children to work under pressure to solve a range of clues to in order to save the world, escape from a situations, save Christmas, Halloween, Easter etc.

Before beginning, you will need to prepare the following - included in each Escape Room:

    • A copy of the Pupil Workbook for each group
    • A set of table activities for every group – prepared beforehand and given to each group after they have all completed each Code Key activity
    • IT sources and research materials (not always necessary)
    • Initial Starting Script sharing the problem to the children
    • Completion Script celebrating the completion of the challenge

Children do not need prior knowledge of the topics being taught to complete these Escape Rooms, some are for fun (holiday based Escape Rooms) and others can offer research materials for the children to find answers to some of the questions within the challenges to solve the Code Key. Escape Rooms are fun, exciting for children and ideal as a way of both introducing new topics and reviewing learning.

Each Escape Room begins by the teacher reading the "Initial Message" script - each is different depending on the challenge which the children need to complete. The scripts for both the beginning and end of the Escape Rooms are included within the Resource Packs in each Escape Room. The "Initial Message" clearly informs the children what the problem is that they must solve and how they can beat the Escape Room! The only way they can do this is to solve the challenges within the Escape Room. This ranges from 8 - 10 Challenges per product. Failure is not an option!

What follows are a range of challenges, using different skills, which the children must solve to discover the code to move onto the next activity. Problem solving, sequencing, comprehension, Math skills, and many more types of challenges are included within each Escape Room - not to mention communication skills, collaborative working, developing team skills and fostering a love and excitement for learning within a different style of lesson structure!

When all of the activities are completed, and the children have gained the correct Code Keys from each activity, the teacher can read the final communication detailing how the children have been able to help solve the problem. It reviews the learning that has taken place within each Challenge, describes how the children have been successful learners, and how the problem has now been solved - the world has been saved and the children are free to leave the Escape Room.

    Setting up the Escape Room

Setting up a room to run an Escape Room is simple and takes the minimal amount of effort. All resources are included within each Escape Room file to support you.

    Before you begin:

    • Children should be split into groups of no more than four and be placed in their own work space. Four works well as a grouping as two does not offer as much collaborative learning and a lot of work to complete, three can often cause arguments and two children against one, and five feels too many to gather around the resources. In our use of Escape Rooms, four is perfect as it creates 2 groups of 2 students to work together on different tasks within each Challenge.
    • Access to IT and research materials should be provided to allow children to research answers to questions and review their own knowledge, as well as checking answers.
    • Each group should have a Code Key Booklet and decide on a team name - this is then written on the front of the booklet and can also be written on the Table Labels included within the Resource Pack (although if printing is on a budget - the table labels are optional)

    During the Escape Room Challenge:

    • Read the Initial Message to the children to set the challenge in context. Discuss what this means, and what the activity entails.
    • Turn to Code Key 1. Agree with the children a set time to complete the problem in – this ensures that the children stay on task and maintains the Escape Room element of working under pressure.
    • At the end of the time, children should have filled in the Code Key in their booklet. The teacher can then check the accuracy of all the groups and talk through the responses the children should have.
    • Move on through the remaining challenges until all of the challenges have been completed.

After the challenge has been completed:

    • For those groups who have been successful, they are then able to read the completed statement where they find out if they have escaped the Escape Room!

There are other ways of running Escape Room activities, for example, each activity could be set up on 9 tables and the children then move from table to table completing the activity. This would reduce the need for as many resources, and access to non-fiction sources and Internet Resources could then be targeted at specific Challenges.

Each Escape Room should last for at least 2 hours. In this growing bundle there are many hours of fun, learning and entertainment to be gained across much of the curriculum.

We hope that your children enjoy these Escape Room.

Remember, if you purchase this product, then every other Escape Room we produce after your purchase, you will receive free of charge - saving you $$$$$

Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of the area of the shape.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
