Description
Perfect for any English First Peoples, NBE (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Studies), or Indigenous studies class (especially in Canada!), this large unit is to teach students about the effects of Canada's Sixties scoop using lessons, projects, a podcast analysis, and studying a play on the topic.
The podcast: Finding Cleo is a 10-part CBC Podcast on a girl whose family looks for her decades later, as they were separated as part of Canada's Sixties Scoop, where Indigenous children were taken from their communities and placed in non-Indigenous foster/adoptive homes. This podcast is hosted by Connie Walker, an Canadian Indigenous journalist and award-winning podcaster. TRIGGER WARNING: This podcast contains mature content, due to the nature of her disappearance- only suitable for senior grades.
Each episode has journal questions attached, as well as a final reflection. The Primary Sources unit is a good intro before starting "Finding Cleo" to introduce students to primary sources (such as hearing from Cleo's family themselves about the impact the sixties scoop had on them!), and also gives a brief introduction on the terms surrounding the Sixties Scoop and intergenerational trauma. Students will then produce a research project (partnered or individual) looking for primary sources on Residential Schools and the Sixties Scoop and presenting their findings to the class.
The Play "Someday" by Drew Hayden Taylor is about a fictional family in Central Ontario who are reunited after decades apart, due to the oldest sibling being taken away during the Sixties Scoop. The play unit has background information on the Sixties Scoop, information about the playwright, journal questions for each act, and ideas for summative pieces once the students finish the play.
INCLUDED FREE: Journal questions to go with Carol Rose GoldenEagle's (Saskatchewan's Poet Laureate) poem, "Qu'Appelle", a poem to her late adopted father after being adopted into his white family as a result of the Sixties Scoop.
