What educators are saying

My own child was having a hard time and needed more practice with fractions, but I needed it to be fun. This product nailed it and my son has so much fun practicing with fractions, while also solving the mystery.
Fractions are such a struggle for my kiddos, but this was fun and they work with partners. To make it more engaging, it was on the topic of ancient Egypt; how fun!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Students must use their fraction math skills to solve the math mystery for the Forgetful Pharaoh! They will be required to apply various fraction skills to unlock important clues and then use their powers of deduction to find where the Forgetful Pharaoh left his scepter.

Suggestion: Pace the clues one by one to keep the class at the same point. If using the clues in a different order, keep the suspect list away from students until all five clues are completed and discovered.

Preparation

- Print the student pages, staple or place in a folder, and your students are set to go.

- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen.

- Editable locations list included: This lets you change the location names to alter the final mystery outcome. Two alternative pre-made lists are also included for a quick swap out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers (Simplifying answers required)
  • Clue 2: Multiplying fractions by whole numbers (simplifying required + writing answers as a mixed number required)
  • Clue 3: Equivalent Fractions (Write the missing numerator/denominator)
  • Clue 4: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators (simplifying answers required)
  • Clue 5: Multiplying Fractions by Fractions

Students must use critical thinking skills to determine what the clue tells them to eliminate from the list of possibilities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

- Use it as part of your math centers, add it to your subtubes, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give it for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.

Standards

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Interpret the product (𝘢/𝘣) × 𝘲 as a parts of a partition of 𝘲 into 𝘣 equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations 𝘢 × 𝘲 ÷ 𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) × 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) × (4/5) = 8/15. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) × (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘤/𝘣𝘥.)
