Description

Are you looking for a rigorous reading benchmark or reading assessment to help prepare your students for state testing? This resource is a comprehensive assessment for the Common Core reading literature and informational standards. Make your reading test prep easier this year!

This reading test prep assessment 8 reading passages and 27 questions, each designed to give you a better understanding of your students’ competencies. Each standard is represented at least one time, with several standards represented 2-3 times. Please check the Standards Based Alignment to see which questions assess which standards. Standards are also listed on the answer key page.

This reading assessment makes the perfect reading test prep or end-of-year benchmark exam!

This reading assessment resource also includes three optional passage-based writing assessments for those states that assess students’ writing abilities in conjunction with passages. The writing prompts are specific to the texts in the assessment. There are three prompts: one informational, one persuasive, and one narrative.

➡️ Tips for Using the 4th and 5th Grade Reading Assessment

This benchmark assessment can be given at the beginning of the year as a pre-assessment, in the middle of the year, or at the end of the year to show growth.

Due to the length of this assessment, I would recommend giving it in parts. You could give pages 1-7 first and then 8 through 15 on another day.

To save on copies, if you give it multiple times or are departmentalized, you could run off one class set and then have the students use the answer document found in this pdf.

➡️ About the Digital Benchmark Reading Assessment

  • There are two digital versions: Google Slides™ and Google Forms™.

  • For the Google Slides, the students use circles to drag and drop for multiple choice questions and text boxes for short answer questions.

  • The Google Forms are not all self-grading. The multiple choice questions are but the short answers will need to be manually graded. You can always delete the short answer questions if you do not wish to use them. The Google Forms also do NOT include the optional writing extensions.

  • There are also TWO versions of the Google Slides: One requires proof for the multiple-choice, and one does not.

  • The content is the SAME as the printable version.

  • Answer keys can be found in the PDF.

NOTE: I wrote this with my 5th graders in mind, but this is definitely applicable to 4th graders. However, I would not suggest this be used for a pre-test for 4th graders. It is better suited as a post-test for 4th grade students.
