What educators are saying

A good resource to see where my students are at. I like that the questions are very challenging and require them to think.

Description

3rd Grade Math Assessment! Aligned to standards! Math test aligned to CCSSM! Standards-based assessment! Digital version included! Covers all standards for 3rd grade math!

This Third Grade Math Standards-Based Assessment is a critical resource for the end of third grade and the beginning of fourth grade! It can be used to assess student understanding of standards-based concepts at the end of the third-grade year OR it can be used at the beginning of fourth grade to evaluate the impact of the summer-slide and what standards your students need to review prior to new instruction.

This assessment has 50 questions and is separated into 6 different parts.

  • There are 2 pages (10 questions) for each of the OA, NBT, NF and MD domains (8 total pages).
  • There are 5 questions for the G domain, and 5 additional fluency and story problem questions (2 total pages).

This makes it easy to break this assessment into parts, to give just part of it to your students at a time. Breaking the assessment into parts will make it more accessible to students, and less intimidating than sitting down to take a 50-question test. It also will reduce test anxiety and testing fatigue which can impact student results. This allows you to really see what students know and understand about each standard. Keeping this in mind, you can absolutely still give the entire assessment at one time. It is a 50-question assessment which could be completed in approximately 40 minutes to one hour since the majority of the questions are multiple choice and multiple select. This makes a great practice test for state-testing. Students can complete this assessment on paper, or digitally using the directions for digital use instructions on the following page.

The question types in this assessment are multiple choice and multiple select for numbers 1-45. Numbers 46-50 are fill in the blank/open-ended answer questions. The question types are a mix between fluency and story problem/application problems.

Analyzing the results of this assessment:

  • Use the “Standard Alignment Guide” on pages 20-22 to analyze student errors on the assessment. Each question is aligned to one (a few are aligned to two) standard(s). This guide includes a brief description of the standard as well. Based on the questions that students answered incorrectly, you can determine the standards in which each student needs support/reteaching. This works well for setting up small groups at the beginning/end of the year!
  • To help determine if student errors are fluency-based or are a word-problem comprehension error, have students complete questions 46-50. If students solve part or parts of 46 and 48 incorrectly, then they likely need practice and support with multiplication and division fluency. If students solve part or parts of 47, 49, and 50 incorrectly, then they need support with story problem solving strategies (I recommend using visual models to support student thinking).

Resource opens as a ZIP file. A paper PDF version is included AND a Digital Version of the project are included. To access the digital version you can either use Microsoft Power Point where students can save their work as a PDF to submit to their teacher. OR You can also upload the Power Point to Google Slides (or One Drive) to have students submit their work on Google Classroom or via sharing on Google Drive. The digital version includes easy-to-use "type answer here" boxes.

Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
