Description

The Lesson:

So, what we have created for you are 30 of the most common prefixes, 15 of the most common roots, and 10 of the most common suffixes based on the high school English teacher Kelly Gallagher’s unit of study to help your students develop word attack reading strategies to become better readers and to perform better on the state exams.

Tell Me More:

Each week, for a total of 11 weeks, have students study 5 of the words. At the end of each week, give your students the self grading google form test. You will be prompted to make your own copy, which you can then edit to meet your students’ needs. We are aware that memorizing is a low level of learning in Bloom’s taxonomy and in depth of knowledge, but it is still a level of learning. Frankly, memorization is an under valued skill and underutilized skill in this day and age where people don’t have to remember much of anything due to the ubiquitous nature of cell phones and the internet. Students would benefit from having to memorize these five word parts each week. Lastly, we did not create a final because we have had poor results with them in the past for 30-15-10. We just stick to the weekly small tests and let our students retake them if needed. We would rather they really learn the material than focus on grades.

What You Will Get:

Lesson Introduction in Google Slides

11 Student Study Guides for each week's words

11 Self Grading Weekly Quizzes using Google Forms

Got it:

We hope that you see lasting change in your students with this approach to word attack strategies.

Happy Teaching!
