3-In-A-Row Addition Dice Game - Common Core Math - Grades K, 1, & 2

This “3-In-A-Row” addition game is great for kindergarten, first, and second grade classrooms. It really helps students memorize their basic addition facts in a FUN WAY. The game can be played on a SMARTBoard or on paper. This upload includes BOTH versions, a SMART Notebook file & a PDF file. An attachment to the PDF file is embedded on the 1st page of the SMARTboard document. This game is great to use as a whole-group or partner/center activity. It is very quick, so students can play a lot of games. Each game board includes 6 games and boards can be copied back-to-back to include 12 games. Since there are so many chances to win, every student is likely to be a winner at least once which is great!

Playing the game is very simple. If you are playing the SMARTBoard version, you really do not need anything! The SMARTBoard version includes interactive dice, playing chips that are infinite cloners, and a picture of the game board, one game on each page. If you are having partners play on paper, all you need are 2 dice, 2 crayons, and 1 paper per group. The goal of the game is to see who can color in 3 spots in a row. Players take turns rolling, adding using any strategy, and then saying number sentences aloud to their partner. Players then color in the box that matches his/her sum. If a student rolls a sum that is already colored in or a number that is not in that particular board, he/she cannot make a move, and the next player gets to roll. The first player to color in 3-in-a-row wins! If no student can color in 3-in-a-row, it is a tie game.

Players may finish each game quickly, but there are many games to play. If you want students to keep score of their overall wins, you can use the scoreboard that is included as a PDF on the 1st page of the Notebook file. While playing this game, students will practice a ton of addition facts because they will just keep rolling and rolling. Students will begin to memorize facts after rolling the same addends over and over again.

Common Core math standards:

Kindergarten
Fluently add and subtract within 5.
Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference.

First Grade
Add and subtract within 20.
Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.

Second Grade
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
