3-5 Social & Racial Justice Morning Meeting Slides-Anti Bias Education-ABAR

Teaching Tolerance’s Social Justice Standards is a road map for anti-bias education at every grade level.

These particular slides were developed for 3-5 classrooms.

The purpose of these slides is to engage our students in deep and meaningful conversations that go beyond the basic "my favorite color is...". They are meant to elicit dialogue about inequalities and equity. What does that look like? How can students be citizens that promote a safe space for all?

As described by TeachingTolerance.org, the Social Justice Standards are a set of anchor standards and age-appropriate learning outcomes divided into four domains—identity, diversity, justice and action (IDJA). The standards provide a common language and organizational structure: Teachers can use them to guide curriculum development, and administrators can use them to make schools more just, equitable and safe.

Through the slides, discussions about anti-bias, multiculturalism and social justice will take place.

You know your students best and how to address certain topics. Little kids can handle big topics, especially when a lot of them already face injustice in their lives; however, as teachers we must also be very cognizant of our own internal biases. When considering what the right answer to a question within the slides is, refer back to the standards in order to know what the expected outcome should be. Although we may each have our own beliefs due to culture, religion, etc.., we must always ensure that we are creating a safe space for children that identify with different groups, especially those who are marginalized.

The daily slides follow a predictable pattern each week (see preview).

Scenario Mondays: Based on different scenarios that prompt students to think about how to engage in specific situations. Some students may not always know how to react or they may feel as though they are powerless. The scenarios are meant to bring awareness to some of the social justice issues that many face. It allows for students to understand that their personal beliefs do not constitute mistreatment of others.

Discussion Tuesdays: Based on the kid friendly wording of the standards. Students will be able to agree or disagree with the statement. It is important for students to explain why they agree or disagree. Those students that disagree are not “wrong”. They may just not be at the full level of understanding yet, which is why we will work on these standards all year. Expand the conversations. Some students may not know what groups they belong to or even “like” some parts of themselves. The standards are meant for students to have progression in their understanding and acceptance of themselves and others.

Around the World Wednesdays: These slides will delve into some information about different countries around the world. It is important for students to be aware of the multiple countries, languages, and cultures that exist outside of their own home country. It is also relevant for students that come from other places to see themselves represented. The goal is not for students to form a touristic approach to other nations. Rather, it is to develop an understanding that countries and cultures outside of their own exist and that these countries/cultures have value. Because there are only 40 weeks, I was not able to include all countries but made sure to have representation from each continent. You can use the editable slides to include countries that you want to talk about in your classroom and that represent your students. Having a classroom map is highly suggested. All of the information I researched for these countries, I was able to obtain through the countries’ official websites and the CIA. If you notice any discrepancies, please let me know so I can fix it.

Reflection Thursdays: Thursdays are meant for deep reflection. Students will be pushed to think about why we have certain things in our world and how they benefit a group of people or do a disservice to others. They will consider their positions as allies, the impact they have and how history has shaped us.

Impact Fridays: Impact Fridays is meant to make students think about the week and the discussions they’ve had. It is the chance for them to start to think critically about how they can make a difference by taking action. It is meant for them to consider all of the domains, but to especially focus on Action.

Each slide is labeled with the appropriate domain it falls under: Identity, Diversity, Justice, or action.

I also included a powerpoint with the master slides, so you can add your own prompts or discuss countries that are not included.
