    Description

You're teaching W.2.8 with your second graders using presidents. While there are tons of biographies about presidents, many of them are written at a reading level that is hard for most of your kids to access. It can be hard to find three different texts on the right reading level for your students that are written in a non-biased fashion with only things that are appropriate for young kids to read about. This resource offers you a bundle of different presidential biographies that each contain everything you need to teach biography writing with W.2.8, comparing and contrasting two or more versions of a text RI.2.9, and understanding and distinguishing fact and opinion.

    TELL ME MORE

This first text is two pages and is an overview of the president's entire life. This text includes their birth, early childhood, education, and family background. It also goes into detail about their legislative journey and other accomplishments. There is not as much focus on the presidency in this text.

The second text focuses almost exclusively on the presidency. With little mention of the president's early life, it goes into greater detail about their accomplishments while in office. It is written in a bipartisan way.

The third text is a quick facts sheet. It covers some of the facts mentioned in early texts while also including fun tidbits of information like for example: their dogs’ names or their favorite sports team.

There is some repeated information from text to text so students can practice finding facts from multiple sources.

There is a fact recording sheet as well as a biography planning paper. There is a cute president-themed writing paper for the final draft. Also included are two rubrics, one for the teacher and one written in more kid-friendly terms for the students. There are also three exit tickets with biography questions.

There are 16 vocabulary cards. Eight vocabulary words and eight definitions with photos. These words are used frequently throughout all the resources to make sure kids get lots of practice with them. There is also a vocabulary drawing paper included to help kids visualize the word meanings.

Also included in this resource is a fact and opinion sorting activity. This includes three large cards with definitions for fact, incorrect fact, and opinion. The cover can be used as a poster and there are presidential-themed early finisher coloring pages with writing prompts.

Documents are available in full color, ink-saving color, black and white, and ink-saving black and white
