Description

This is the first part of a proven system that improves math fact automaticity, leading to better fluency with more complex equations.

Fluency with math facts is crucial to freeing up the cognitive resources required to be successful with advanced mathematics. This packet includes 5 "Fire Up!" sheets used as a first daily activity in math classes. This activity is designed to train automaticity with math facts while at the same time get students excited to begin math class. Future editions will include subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, LCM, GCF, square roots, etc. Progress in the series has been found to correlate with common core assessments aligned with the Numbers and Operations strand in 6th grade. In other words, the further a student gets in the series, the higher you can expect their N & O scores to be on average. Students have been observed to improve on sheets they do not complete at first and the visible progress that they make can be very motivating to them.

Includes 5 sheets with random single digit addition problems. If you have questions about setting up this activity, please contact me. I have experience running it in classrooms. I want to hear if there is enough interest in completing the entire series.

Materials:

  • Timer
  • Pens/Pencils
  • Worksheet
  • Folders can be used to keep completed worksheets in so students have a record of their progress

Procedures:

  • Print enough sheets for students (used one sheet each day, for example, 1.1 Monday, 1.2 Tuesday, etc.).
  • Have a sheet on each student's desk face down as they walk in.
  • When you say go, students have 2 minutes to flip the sheet over and complete as many problems as they can.
  • When finished, you may read answers and have them correct errors. Students write a final fraction on the top out of 40 to note how many they got correct the first time.
  • Students can move on to the next skill (e.g. subtraction) when they finish all 40 problems 100% correct 2 days in a row.
  • Eventually, students differentiate in which skill they are on. Correcting work can be done by passing out answer sheets face down when passing out the work. I will create answer sheets in future editions.
  • You will need to track where students are in the series. In the future, I will include paper and digital spreadsheets that help with that.
