Description
Two-Digit Subtraction Number Puzzles are a set of four-piece puzzles that develop students' fluency and mental math strategies for two-digit subtraction using a variety of subtraction strategies.

The puzzles are built with four models and strategies.
- the expression
- a number line
- base-10 blocks
- breaking apart the minuend and subtrahend by place value
The answer is displayed in the middle of the puzzle. Each piece requires students to figure out the answer using the strategy or model and does not reveal the answer without some work.
Students can match all four pieces or concentrate two pieces at a time.
Which Puzzles are Included?
Puzzle sets include 20 expressions that require regrouping and 20 expressions that do not require regrouping, for a total of 40 puzzles.
The puzzles are also duplicated to show two representations of the base-10 blocks, so there are a total of 80 puzzles.
Base-10 Block Representation
- One set has the minuend as base-10 blocks without any indication of the subtrahend.
- Set two has the minuend with the subtrahend blocks darkened to indicate their subtraction.
Both sets use the same numbers and are exactly the same, except for the representation of the base-10 blocks. Choose the set that works best for your students.

This activity is meant to develop students' ability to use a variety of subtraction strategies to gain fluency with two-digit subtraction.
Simple print each puzzle piece on colored paper, laminate for durability, and cut apart. I encourage students to use whiteboard markers on some pieces to subtract. If laminated, the whiteboard marker ink wipes off easily.
