What educators are saying

I had some students who were obsessed with the titanic this year and this resource was super engaging for them. Thanks for making this!

Description

This packet includes 9 activites for student to practice measuring boats. They will measure a variety of boats and will also compare boat lenghs. It is set up for students to measure with nonstandard units but they can use a ruler to measure as enrichment. Students will order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.

At the end of the unit students will make their own boats using whatever you have available. I recommend using foam noodles. Students will use the boats they make to measure, compare lengths, and then conduct a science experiment to see if the length of a boat affects it's speed.

This unit incorporates teaching the concepts with a culminating activity of making their boat at the end.

Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
