Description
This resource is ideal for use toward the end of the year in first grade and/or at the beginning of second grade. (To help provide each student reading material at just the right level, this resource is part of a series of Reading Comprehension Passages for Guided Reading Levels C through P.)
15 reading passages, designed to help kids work toward the goals of reading Levels I and J (DRA Levels 16 - 18) text and thoughtfully answering text-based questions, are included.
Four multiple choice questions and three short answer questions are included with each passage.
To provide flexibility, for use in distance learning and/or a classroom setting, the following options are offered:
1) A link to this document in Google Slides™
2) A link to a document with a JPEG image of each page
3) Ready for use with Easel by TpT™ (the new TpT digital tool)
4) Printable, as a traditional PDF, in full color
5) Printable, as a traditional PDF, in an ink-saving black and white version
As students are learning to use evidence to support their thinking, I have them find and highlight the section of text they use to justify their answer.
Two Options Include:
★ Color coded highlighting - Students highlight the answer to each question in a different color.
★ Numbered highlighting - Students highlight evidence within the text and then write the question number beside the highlighted evidence.
These passages and worksheets are useful for distance learning, guided reading, homework, choral reading, fluency work, and literacy centers.
I often have students go on scavenger hunts to find and highlight words with long vowels, words with specific endings, and/or words from our word work.
The Following Passages Are Included:
★ Frogs
★ Cats
★ Spiders
★ Goldfish
★ Mailing a Letter
★ Food Chains
★ Light
★ Day and Night
★ Heat
★ Stars
★ A Plane Ride
★ Energy
★ The Lion and the Mouse
★ The Rhinoceros and the Tick Bird
★ The Turnip
For use as a printable resource, both a full color version and an ink-saving black and white option are included.
For online/digital use, this resource is aligned with the new Tpt Digital Tool, through which selected pages can be assigned using Google Classroom.
If you'd like a quick, effective way to determine each child's ideal Guided Reading Placement Level, take a moment to check out this Text Level Estimator.

Please note: An answer key is included for the multiple choice questions. For many of the written response questions, answers can vary and are considered correct as long as the student logically uses evidence from the text to support his or her answer.
