Description

This resource features 40 Addition, Subtraction, and Comparison Word Problems. Ideal for use at the end of the year in first grade and/or at the beginning of the year in 2nd grade!

These activities are perfect for use in learning packets, as journal pages, for morning work, during group instruction, and/or as homework.

Each page is presented both in color and in an ink saving black and white version.

A cover is included for use in math journals or distance learning packs.

Using Easel by TpT™ (the new TpT Digital Tool), this resource can be assigned through Google Classroom. Click Easel Activity, just below the download button, to get started.

Each sheet includes an extension/bonus question at the bottom of the page.

These bonus questions can be used in a variety of ways. They are perfect for use as extension activities for students to discuss and complete at home with a family member.

When these word problems are used for whole-group instruction, it is common for some students to have completed tasks while others still need support.

“Early finishers” can read the bonus question, flip their paper over, and work on this challenge question while the teacher provides individual and/or small group instruction as needed.

In this way, these bonus questions help teachers differentiate during group lessons.

These Word Problems Support The Following Common Core Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Multiple problems are included for each type of problem listed in this standard.

Many thanks for stopping by and taking a look!

Sincerely, Anne Gardner

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
