What educators are saying

This was a great activity because students were able to connect with it having gone through a pandemic themselves.

Historical Context:

The 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic, also known as the "Spanish flu," was a global pandemic that emerged during a critical period in the wake of World War I. This influenza pandemic, caused by the H1N1 influenza virus, affected nearly every corner of the world and is estimated to have infected one-third of the global population, leading to the deaths of tens of millions of people. The timing of the pandemic, with the first wave emerging in the spring of 1918 and a deadlier second wave in the fall of the same year, had significant implications as it coincided with the final months of World War I. The war facilitated the virus's rapid spread, as military movements, troop transports, and crowded wartime conditions created ideal conditions for transmission. Furthermore, censorship during the war led to limited reporting on the flu in many countries except Spain, where news was openly reported, hence the name "Spanish flu." This pandemic caused widespread fear, disruption, and a tragic loss of life, affecting both the young and elderly, and creating significant strain on healthcare systems and societies. The 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic remains one of the deadliest pandemics in history, highlighting the importance of effective public health responses, timely information dissemination, and global cooperation in the face of a devastating health crisis.
