Earlier this year I created Telling Time, which addressed telling analog time to the hour. I used it with several clients and it was very successful. This is the follow-up.

I Can Tell The Time teaches 15 minute increments – all times ending in :00, :15, :30, and :45. The verse lyrics copy the pattern that worked in the first song:

1. tell where the small hand is

2. tell where the big hand is

3. tell the time

This song adds an informational chorus that visually previews the upcoming clocks and focuses on the various positions of the big hand and how they alter the end numbers of the times. Highlighting the targeted numbers in red (as opposed to the zoom effect used in the previous video) was used because these red highlighted visuals are also included as printable flashcards and because, other than times ending in o’clock, the small hand does not point exactly to the hour number.

I struggled with how to convey the position of the small hand at various times… at 1:15 it’s 1/4th of the way past the 1, at 1:30 it’s halfway between 1 and 2, and at 1:45 it’s 3/4th of the way to 2… all this seemed much complicated to explain lyrically so I just decided to say what number it’s “past” and show the visual.

There are educational clocks that allow the small and big hands to move independently of each other. This makes it possible to point the small hand directly at the 1 when the time is 1:15, 1:30, or 1:45. I would discourage the use of these. While it makes teaching easier, it will just lead to confusion when the student tries to read the time on a real clock.

Because covering every 15 minute interval would have resulted in a 20-minute video, the information has been broken up into 4 5-minute videos: 1:00-3:45, 4:00-6:45, 7:00-9:45, and 10:00-12:45. Each video comes in a teaching version that shows and sings the correct time and a testing version where the student provides the answer.

These 8 videos are also included as 8 songs… plus an additional instrumental song version. While the video mostly focuses on one clock at a time, some students benefit from seeing and comparing multiple clocks. So, printable visuals are included for use with the songs. Chorus visuals show 4 clocks horizontally (for example 1:00, 1:15, 1:30, 1:45) with the analog numbers 12, 3, 6, 9 and their corresponding digital numbers highlighted in red. Verse visuals include three vertical images of the same clock highlighted in red to match the verse visuals 1. small hand 2. big hand 3. time.

Printable flashcards of all times are also included in three varieties:
