12 Everyday Inventions and their African American Inventors - Follow the Clues

Follow the clues to describe everyday items and their African-American inventors. Visual structure is provided throughout the activities. These activities promote descriptive language skills, social interaction with questioning and answers between peers, and expanding sentence structure. It works bottom up to provide the detailed clues where students generate the answer, as well as top down where the item is given and the student describes it with details. The contents include:

-Ideas to preview and extend the learning content
-Clue cards with matching answer cards
-Describes 12 inventions (hairbrush, peanut butter, mailbox, super soaker, traffic light, pencil sharpener, potato chips, clock, ironing board, air conditioning, lunchbox, clock) using the descriptions of category, parts, function. A visual picture choice board is provided if needed for answer choices.
-A poster to remind students of each category of clues (category, parts, function)
-Descriptive Writing Sentence Builder. Each page has three sentences with supporting structure. There is also a word bank with three choices grouped by descriptive label. Each sentence uses all three labels taught within the descriptive set.
-Communication notes to encourage carryover
-Compare & Contrast template: Students will choose two items to describe on the chart using category, parts, function. Then compares/contrasts on the Venn diagram.
